What is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?
Benefits of PRP Therapy
- Focus on body healing itself
- Non surgical approach
- All natural therapy, no rejection
- Injuries heal quicker
- Minimal to no downtime
- Rejuvenates body’s natural healing
How does PRP Therapy Help?
- Body’s natural first response to a soft tissue injury is to transport platelet cells to damaged area
- Platelets begin the reparation process and initiate the assistance from stem cells
- PRP therapy delivers a higher concentration of platelets to reinforce body’s natural efforts
- Small sample of blood drawn then centrifuged; separates platelets from remaining blood components
- PRP then injected in area of injury, stimulating and reinforcing body’s natural healing.
*Zero risk of transmissible infection and very low risk of an allergic reaction
How Long Does it Take?
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
It’s important to understand that regenerative medicine is not done as a “quick fix”. The goal is for long-term healing of the injury. While many patients may only need one injection, collagen regeneration takes an average of 4 to 6 months and for some, many require a few injections. Functionality and pain assessments will be done approximately 2 to 3 weeks after the injection in order to ascertain if/what kind of additional therapy may be necessary. There are a few factors determining the number of treatments a patient may receive including: age, area of treatment, amount of pain experienced before beginning PRP therapy.
Is There Any Pain?
Some of our patients report swelling, stiffness, and slight to moderate discomfort which may last a few hours post-injection(we advise icing areas multiple times). This is completely normal, and is actually a sign the treatment is taking effect! After time, the injured area will start healing and become stronger, and you will experience much less pain.
What are the Expected Results?
Within the first few weeks, there should be some beginning improvement, which should gradually increase as your body’s healing continues. PRP therapy is recognized as being highly successful at alleviating pain and helping patients return back to their lives relatively quickly. MRI imaging and ultrasounds have proven PRP therapy’s efficacy by showing the tissue repair in the healing process.
At Innovative Sports medicine, each of our physicians work with patients to develop a curated treatment plan depending on each person’s individual needs!
