SpineJet™ Percutaneous Hydro-Discectomy for Herniated Disc Treatment

The human vertebrae is made up of 26 bones. Between each vertebra are “intervertebral discs” that provide cushion, absorb shock, and hold the spin in place.

A disc herniation is a condition that can cause pain for many individuals. Also known as a slipped disc, this condition occurs when some spinal fluid “jelly” leaks from a weaker spot on a spinal disk, also referred to as an intervertebral disc. Each spinal disc is filled with a jelly-like fluid in the center with a tough exterior. A herniated disc is most commonly found in the lower back but is not limited to that region. Sometimes, it can be found in the neck vertebrae. When the jelly-like fluid is freely-floating in the spine, the chemicals making up the fluid irritate nerves in the immediate are and can cause a great deal of discomfort and pain. This herniation can also place pressure on nerves, leading to back pain or numbness, muscle pain and weakness, notable in the arms or legs.

As someone ages, the intervertebral discs have decreased water content. This causes the disc to have a greater chance of splitting. While it’s not always feasible to find the exact time a herniated disc occurs, it may be caused by incorrectly moving/lifting heavy objects.

The SpineJet™ treatment is an especially viable possibility for patients who have had little success with less invasive treatments such as medication, chiropractic, physical therapy, or epidural spine injections.

The SpineJet HydroDiscectomy System is a minimally invasive procedure that safely decompresses discs to alleviate pain and avoid surgical procedures. It is a more effective alternative to a more invasive procedure such as a discectomy. The hydrodiscectomy is a newer technology using a fluid jet.

This technology was created by HydroCision, Inc, in Billerica, MA. The goal was to provide individuals with a much more minimally-invasive approach to the typical microdiscectomy. This newer percutaneous hydrodiscectomy has been proven to treat pain endured by disc herniations in patients.

How Does the SpineJet Procedure Treat a Herniated Disc?

This procedure takes roughly 30 minutes and is performed at an outpatient ambulatory surgical center. Our clinic offers this service, which will allow you to go home later that day.

The device delivers a high-pressure jet of saline water at controlled speed to remove herniated disc components and reduce pressure on nerves and consequently relieving pain. This procedure requires a small 4mm incision on the patient’s back, which does not require stitches and can be closed with steristrips and bandaid. Once healed, there will be a faint or no scar.

Is SpineJet an effective treatment option?

Based on intensive clinical studies, the procedure has proved to be highly effective. In one study, patients claimed their back and leg pain improved by 94%. In another study with 69 patients, 98% reported satisfaction with the results.

A Hydrodiscectomy is a much safer procedure than a traditional discectomy, which has the risk of complications.

SpineJet vs Discectomy

The SpineJet procedure is a much less invasive procedure, carrying less risks and faster recovery times.

A Traditional discectomy is performed by a spine or orthopedic surgeon, requiring general anesthesia, removing parts of bone, utilizing lasers and other heating devices which have the risk of causing collateral damage on surrounding muscles, nerves, and soft tissues. The recovery time for this surgical procedure is between 6 to 8 weeks.

A SpineJet procedure only uses a high-pressure jet of saline, carrying minimal risk to surrounding muscle, nerves, and tissue. No bone is removed, and no stiches are necessary. Many patients have recovered from this procedure within a week.

A follow-up appointment is later created to assess pain management and the recovery process.

Who is a good Candidate for SpineJet?

A prime candidate for the SpineJet is someone who has tried more conservative approaches for disc herniation, but still hasn’t found success.
